Choosing a Kilimanjaro Route
Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Marangu or the Northern Circuit? How to choose the route that suits your fitness and schedule.
Why route and length matter
On Kilimanjaro the biggest challenge is altitude. Routes that give you more days and “climb high, sleep low” opportunities generally help acclimatisation.
Machame
Scenic and popular, usually done in six or seven days. The profile helps acclimatisation, but the trail can be busy.
Lemosho
A longer, quieter route that starts in the west and joins other routes near Shira. Often favoured by those who want extra acclimatisation days.
Rongai
Approaches from the north and is generally drier and less crowded. It is a good option in the rainy season.
Marangu
The only route with hut accommodation. It is often done in five days, but a six-day version improves acclimatisation.
Northern Circuit
The longest route, circling the mountain over about nine days. It offers excellent acclimatisation and quiet trails.
Preparation
Whichever route you choose, build fitness with long hikes, practise in your boots, check with your doctor and choose a team that puts safety first.
