Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres.

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a freestanding volcano rising from the plains near Moshi to 5,895 metres at Uhuru Peak. A climb passes through several ecological zones, from farmland and montane forest to heather, moorland, alpine desert and the glaciated summit.

Most routes need between five and nine days. Longer itineraries improve acclimatisation and generally give a better chance of reaching the top. Popular routes include Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Marangu and the Northern Circuit, each with its own character.

A climb is demanding because of altitude rather than technical difficulty. Good preparation, the right route, proper equipment and a supportive team make the difference.

Highlights & attractions

  • Uhuru Peak summit
  • Shira Plateau and Barranco Wall
  • Rainforest and moorland zones
  • Sunrise from the crater rim
  • Optional pre-climb day trips on the lower slopes
