What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari

A practical packing list for game drives, cool mornings and dusty roads, plus tips on luggage and light aircraft.

Pack light, in layers

Mornings and evenings can be cold, especially in the highlands, while midday is often hot. Layers you can add or remove are more useful than a few heavy items.

Clothing

  • Neutral-coloured trousers and long-sleeved shirts (khaki, olive, tan)
  • T-shirts or lightweight tops
  • A fleece or warm jacket for early starts and evenings
  • A light waterproof jacket
  • A sun hat and sunglasses
  • Comfortable closed shoes and sandals for camp
  • Swimwear if your lodge has a pool

Gear

  • Binoculars (one pair each makes a big difference)
  • Camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and memory cards
  • Power bank and a universal adapter
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • A reusable water bottle

Health and documents

Bring your passport, visa, insurance details and any personal medication. Speak to your doctor or a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention well ahead of your trip.

Luggage

Soft-sided duffel bags are easier to load into vehicles and light aircraft, which often have strict weight limits. Ask us about the limits for your itinerary.
